Written by: JAMES GALWAY, PADDY MOLONEY, DP Lyrics © BMG Rights Management, Universal Music Publishing Group, Songtrust Ave, Warner Chappell Music, Inc. I ask young men to lay me down, likely for my eventual burial. I'm currently sick and feel like I'm close to dying. Oh but I am sick now and my days are numbered I wander from town to town, looking for purpose. I won't sing any more until I get a drink, likely an alcoholic one. I supported someone with gold and silver, likely a lover.īut I'll sing no more now till I get a drink. My wrongdoing is memorialized on a black marble stone. On the way to the sea, which is often salty. ![]() I long to be in my hometown of Carrickfergus. I sleep wherever I can find a soft patch of grass, and I'm not tied down to any one place. I'll live my life moving from place to place without direction. Have all passed on like the melting snow.Įveryone from my childhood has died, and their memories are fading like melting snow. The people I grew up with, including family and friends. I recall my childhood with sadness and regret. My childhood days bring back sad reflections I want to be with you so badly that I'm willing to cross the sea and die. I wish I could find someone to help me cross the sea. I don't have the means to fly over to you. I want to be with you so badly that I would go to the extremes, like crossing the deepest ocean.īut the sea is wide and I can't swim overĪs much as I wish to be with you, the distance is too great for me to cross. I would do anything to be with you, even swim the deepest ocean. I don't need you forever, only for a short time in Ballygrand. I long for your company in Carrickfergus, a town in Northern Ireland. The speaker then invites the young men to lay them down. They confess to being a “handsome rover” who goes from place to place while acknowledging that their health is failing and they are getting old. However, the speaker notes that they will not sing any further until they have a drink. In the next verse, the speaker alludes to a former lover in Kilkenny, whom they once supported with gold and silver. The speaker acknowledges their life as a wandering one, wherein they can lay in the grass and are free to roam, but they long to be home in Carrickfergus, where they can hear the sound of the sea. The speaker then laments the passing of time, reflecting on their childhood and the people who have passed away. The speaker acknowledges the vast distance that separates them from their love, acknowledging that they cannot physically cross the ocean to be with them. In Joan Baez’s song Carrickfergus, the speaker reflects on their desire to be with their loved one in the town of Carrickfergus. ![]()
